What is Stomach Cancer and it’s causes?
Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, is a type of cancer that starts in the cells of the stomach lining. The exact cause of stomach cancer is not fully understood, but there are certain factors known to increase the risk:
1. Helicobacter pylori infection: This bacterium is known to cause chronic inflammation in the stomach lining, which increases the risk of developing stomach cancer.
2. Diet: Consumption of smoked, salted, or pickled foods, as well as a diet low in fruits and vegetables, is associated with a higher risk of stomach cancer.
3. Tobacco and alcohol use: Both smoking tobacco and heavy alcohol consumption have been linked to an increased risk of stomach cancer.
4. Family history: Having close relatives who have had stomach cancer may increase the risk of developing the disease.
5. Certain medical conditions: Conditions such as chronic gastritis, stomach polyps, and a history of stomach surgery can increase the likelihood of stomach cancer.
It’s important to note that having one or more of these risk factors does not necessarily mean a person will develop stomach cancer. Conversely, some individuals may develop the disease without any known risk factors. Regular check-ups and screenings can aid in early detection and treatment.
